When reading Strawson’s essay again it was still confusing to me but I was able to pick up a lot more on the main points. Strawson’s points stood out more to me in the second read, and I was able to pick out his words more than the quotes and examples from other people. I was finally able to pick out that one of Strawson’s main points that not everyone is mentally coded for life stories and narratives. I also finally picked up on the point Strawson makes when “discussing the tendency to attribute control is self”. I agree that not everyone has the ability to control self identity and the feelings, ideas associated around it. With this second read I was able to make a text-to-world connection when discussing what Strawson feels plays a role in how we experience the world. When he states that he believes and understands that “genetic inheritance and sociocultural place and time” (Strawson). This reminds me of a more scientific outlook on life such as the disciplines of Psychology and Sociology. I also was able to make more sense of the concept of multiple selfs that Strawson discusses. I personally do not agree with the idea of multiple selfs to deal with different situations. I think there is an inner crowd, but it is one self sorting out many different factors.
