Blog Post #14

I am feel I am achieving my annotation goals relatively well. I have been elaborating a lot more when I use the word important or star a section. I make sure to have key words to explain why a section is significant so that when it comes to finding evidence for my papers later I can easily find what I am looking for.

The essay “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” by Yo-Yo Ma was originally published on the World-Post which is an online news and blog site. In Yo-Yo Ma’s bio there is a lot of description of his past accomplishments and educational background. They mention his multiple Grammy Awards, albums, and his many other awards. In the bio it also mentions how he attended and graduated from both Juilliard and Harvard University. This helps establish credibility and gives the reader’s evidence of why what he says can be trusted and taken seriously. My past experiences and previous knowledge are circumstances that surround my reading experience. My personal views and opinions effect how I perceive and take in account the main points of the essay. My purpose for reading this text is academic and to be able to successfully discuss and write about the main points of this essay. The main purpose of this essay was to persuade and inform the importance of arts in everything we do as our culture changes and grows technologically. This is important because in today’s world we are in the age of globalization and many of the points such as empathy and the arts are important in understanding other cultures and being culturally sensitive. This is also important in the way we understand technology, innovation, and STEM in education. This shows and alternative way of thinking about empathy and the arts, a way of thinking that goes against what the average American thinks.

Bolster: support or strengthen; prop up.
